Independent field guide

How Georgetown is organizing AI governance, and where the public-interest work is happening.

A source-led map of the university process, the questions it must address, and the research communities already contributing to the debate.

Important boundary. Hoyas.ai is independent. This guide describes announced structures and public work. It does not speak for Georgetown or predict decisions the university has not made.

The process

01 / 04

One steering committee, three formal input paths.

The structure is designed to gather perspectives from faculty, staff, and students before university-wide principles are finalized.

University process

Steering Committee

A faculty steering committee is leading outreach and development of university principles, with monthly progress reports to the Faculty Senate.

Input group 01

Research

The research group is intended to bring research practices, opportunities, and risks into the university process.

Input group 02

Teaching and pedagogy

This group brings course design, learning, faculty practice, and student experience into the work.

Input group 03

Administration and operations

This group addresses how AI affects university systems, services, technology, and day-to-day operations.

What to watch

02 / 04

December 2026

Georgetown University Principles for AI Use

The Steering Committee is expected to seek Faculty Senate endorsement after outreach and monthly progress reports.

Spring 2027

Practical guidance

The original initiative announcement anticipates operational guidance following the higher-order principles.

Current pilot

AI Fellows

Faculty and students are testing course-level uses, limits, assignments, materials, and feedback.

Public-interest landscape

03 / 04

Governance is wider than policy writing.

It also includes the research, teaching, implementation, and public dialogue that help a community decide what responsible practice requires.

01

Human dignity and the common good

Georgetown conversations connect AI choices to Jesuit and Catholic values, work, human agency, and responsibility.

02

Law, privacy, and accountability

Faculty and centers study surveillance, consent, platform governance, data protection, and the legal institutions shaping AI.

03

Security and international competition

CSET research and public commentary examine safety, China, cyber operations, talent, and emerging-technology policy.

04

Teaching and learning

CNDLS, faculty, students, and the AI Fellows pilot are testing how AI can support learning without weakening judgment or integrity.

05

Health and applied research

Georgetown and MedStar researchers are applying AI to health data, clinical research, and interdisciplinary education.

06

Work, business, and public policy

Programs across McDonough, McCourt, Law, and other units examine labor, organizational change, literacy, and implementation.

Open questions

04 / 04

The decisions that will define the framework.

These are questions Hoyas.ai will track as official documents, meetings, pilots, and guidance become public.

  1. Which AI uses require university-wide guardrails, and which decisions remain with schools, programs, instructors, or researchers?
  2. How will Georgetown protect privacy, intellectual property, academic integrity, accessibility, and human judgment?
  3. How will students, staff, and faculty see how their input influenced the final principles?
  4. How will the university evaluate tools, disclose changes, and revise guidance as technology evolves?
